The flooring trends we predict will stay in 2024
Design styles come and go, and it is no surprise that the flooring choices tightly follow the latest interior design trends. With thousands of colors, sizes, styles, cuts, and patterns available it can be easy to get overwhelmed. As we begin to close out the year, we took a moment to share insight into the trends and styles we predict are on their way out going into 2025.
- Overly distressed hardwood. While texture is still popular, as it provides the depth and rustic appeal many homeowners like to capture, the overly distressed and worn look is starting to fade. We are seeing more people lean towards cleaner wood finishes. The distressed look took off a few years ago when the “farmhouse” interior design style was trending. It is not surprising that as the farmhouse design is starting to fade, so is the distressed flooring. By the same token, the farmhouse style brought with it a plethora of white and gray shades. We are seeing those start to fade out and be replaced with warmer and more natural tones, such as browns, to create a cozier environment.
- Carpet. While carpet will always have its place, there has been a steady decline in carpet specifically in high-traffic areas. The traditional carpeted living room is being replaced with hardwood or luxury vinyl tile (LVT) with an area rug for comfort. Hard surface flooring is a popular choice in getting a unified appearance throughout several rooms of your home, skipping the transitions needed for carpet. Carpet also proves easier to stain, and often harder to replace. For both style and cleanliness reasons we expect to see people choose hard surfaces over carpet going into the new year.
- Glossy finishes. Many homeowners are choosing to go with a matte or satin finish when replacing their glossy tile, hardwood, or LVT. Glassy finishes tend to be less forgiving and show imperfections such as scratches, dents, footprints, or dirt. A matte finish has proven to be the better choice for pets, kids, or high-traffic areas. Additionally, matte finishes come in a variety of woodgrain and non-wood finishes so there is a style and color for every design choice!
